Brain Waves: The Future of Fashion?

Traditionally when we think of fashion, we think of static accoutrements that we put on to express who we are. Now with fashion licensing, the opportunity for self expression has grown. Increasingly consumers will see their favorite character and fashion brands infused. But will fashion stop there?

The answer is no. What is in store for the future of fashion and fashion licensing? Japanese company, Neurowear, believes it is brain wave operated fashion. See below:

Initially after watching the video, I myself thought it was a joke. Then I visited their website. Necomimi (fluffy brain wave controlled animal ears) are their first big hit and have already been licensed to a popular Japanese anime show, "The Wolf Children, Ame and Yuki."

Other new product lauches including: shippo (a brain wave controlled tail) and bo-shippo (a brain wave controlled tail hat) were presented at the Tokyo Game Show September 20th-23rd.

Will we see brain wave controlled fashion at upcoming licensing shows? I hope so... can't wait to see which brands license this first!

Licensing, Not Just for Traditional Character Brands

Hopefully our blog posts have made it clear that licensing is no longer an industry just for character brands. Musicians, celebrities, fashion lines, museums, non profits and many other types of businesses have entered the licensing scene.

According to Publisher's Weekly, one of the newest brands to enter the marketplace is E.L. James' now infamous Fifty Shades of Grey book triology (seen above). As of August 14, CopCorp Licensing (Agent for Fifty Shades of Grey), had sealed three licensing deals for the brand.

Soon consumers will be able to buy Fifty Shades of Grey hosiery, pajamas and day time apparel (including: t-shirts, tops and hoodies).

Fashion Licensing: The Next Big Thing

Upwards of $190 billion dollars in retail revenue is generated from licensed products. The fashion industry accounts for almost $50 billion, according to Fashion Newspaper. Advanstar recognizing this growing market, created a special Fashion section at this years Licensing International Expo.

Traditionally fashion brands have forgone Licensing Expo in lieu of MAGIC (AdAge). However, this past June Licensing International Expo saw exhibitors including: Skechers, Paris Blues, Von Dutch, LA Gear, Nicole Miller, Perry Ellis, Vera Bradley and Cherokee Group to name a few.

Fashion brands at the show are not the only brands entering into licensing. In June 2011 the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation licensed the rights to Ram Pacific to market and distribute the Phillips-Van Heusen izod brand in Singapore. In August 2011 Victoria Secrets PINK and the National Football League teamed up to design the Pink NFL apparel line together that is sold at Victoria Secret stores. In December 2011 the Tommy Hilfiger Group (owned by Phillips-Van Heusen) licensed Tommy Hilfiger men's and women's runway collections for Fall 2012-Spring 2013 to Ittierre S.p.A. And, in January 2012 Kenneth Cole gave licensing rights to Delta Galil Industries, Ltd. for Kenneth Cole men's and women's underwear (www.fashionnewspaper.com).

While fashion brands are just entering the licensing space, the workflow needs are the same. First time Licensing International Expo fashion exhibitor, Cherokee Group, is a testament to the fact. After meeting at this years Licensing International Expo, Cherokee Group chose MyMediabox for their product approval workflow.
