Tips for Keeping Your DAM System Healthy

A digital asset management system is a great tool for saving time and money. Hosted systems like Mediabox-DAM allow users to manage and share assets from one convenient location with any internal or external guest who has an internet connection.

Want to make sure your DAM system remains healthy? Here are a few tips:

  1. Be aware of aliased assets- duplications lead to redundant data
  2. Archive old files- access activity reports to see which files are accessed infrequently
  3. Reorganize your folders- delete or update old folders
  4. Analyze your folders- if you have thousands of assets in one folder you might want to create subfolders
  5. Identify required metadata- inform users uploading assets which metadata fields are necessary

Making the move to a Digital Asset Management System

When preparing to implement a Digital Asset Management System, companies should consider the key points below to ensure they will get the most out of using a DAM application. Completing these steps will make for a smooth transition into any DAM system.

          Locating Assets
The first step is locating all of the assets your company owns. Assets may be stored within separate departments or by individuals, by third party suppliers, or be in hard-copy format and need to be digitized. This will usually need to be a company-wide effort since not all departments/individuals are aware of the existence of the same assets.

Organizing Assets
You will need to consider the best way to organize your assets to make it most efficient for your end users. One option is generic cataloging of assets: images, videos, documents, etc. or you could organize your folders by products, brands, departments, regions, or any other category.

Metadata
Tagging your assets with metadata will help your users locate the files within your DAM system by using the key words you have assigned to the assets. We typically recommend companies to choose a few key metadata fields to commit to.

Following these three easy suggestions will make implementing a DAM system much easier and effective. Be sure to check with your provider about the best way to initially upload the assets to your system as well.

Monetize Your Cloud: Brand Licensing

Now that you have the "cloud", the question is what are you going to put in it?

If you have not considered intellectual property (commonly: brand names, icons, characters) you should.

Why? According to the Federal Trade Commission, less than 10 years ago 80% of the components of the S&P 500 Market Value were intangible assets (intellectual property being the largest component). In 2008, global licensing revenue was greater than $150 Billion USD and growing at a rate of 25-35% a year. Yet, while global licensing revenue has increased by up to 35%, IBISWorld (the world's largest independent publisher of U.S. industry research) calculates that the number of companies operating in this field has only increased by 1% annually.

Licensing your intangible assets is an easy way to grow your revenue. If you own the rights to vintage brands, revive them. Established assets do not require extensive marketing or exposure. Newer assets? Test the waters at one of many global licensing trade shows.Once you have interested licensees and have negotiated rights contracts, it is up to your licensees to produce.

Licensees want the rights to your products, most often because there is already a demand for your brand, icon or character. Instead of taking a chance on a new brand name, they buy the reassurance that your brand recognition gives them. They then create products using the rights you have sold them-- all pre-approved by you.

That is where MyMediabox comes in. MyMediabox offers cloud technology specifically tailored to the needs of the licensing industry. Store, share and promote digital assets with licensees in Mediabox-DAM. From there interact with licensees throughout the entire creative process with Mediabox-PA (we can even integrate Licensor/Licensee contracts using Mediabox-DM). The MyMediabox suite helps you ensure the integrity of your brand, while you grow your revenue through licensing.

Small Cell Technology: An Answer to Overloaded Networks

In a recent article "Itsy-bitsy teeny cell towers are coming" on CNNMoney, writer David Goldman voices a well known problem-- cell phone connectivity. For the most part accessing our mobile networks to make calls, upload photos to facebook or tweet about the coolest thing we've done/heard/seen all day is not a problem.

What about when we're at a sports game? Concert? Or worse if there is a natural disaster and no one can reach anyone, because EVERYONE is trying to reach someone at the same time. The cell phone towers that line our streets and dot the highway were not built to handle the massive amounts of data that are being shared today.

According to Cisco's Mobile Visual Networking Index in four years "more than half of the Internet's traffic will come from mobile devices, and 71% of that will be big video files." Looking at our industry, specifically Digital Asset Management, MyMediabox cannot disagree with the numbers. Our clients utilize our services on a daily basis to store and share large digital assets. Those in the entertainment industry use Mediabox-DAM to deliver full screeners and, by the end of this year, will be doing so via mobile apps.

To keep up with the exponential growth of mobile data sharing, cell phone companies are looking into small cell technology. Putting up more of the same cell towers is out the question- the time and money- not too mention the unappealing aesthetics of the structures quickly ruled out that option. Small cell technology on the other hand offers greater flexibility.

Small cells can be explained as tiny antennas that fit in the palm of your hand. They operate on low-powered radio access nodes, with a range of 10-200 meters. While this is much less than traditional towers (that offer a range of a few kilometers), they can be placed almost anywhere (the sides of buildings, benches, etc.) due to their size, creating a more reliable and uninterrupted connection.

If you work for a large corporation, facility or venue that tends to attract mass amounts of people you might want to consider looking into small cells to support your network. Alcatel-Lucent and Powerwave currently have their own versions on the market.

MyMediabox will as always continue to provide software-as-a-service... we just want to make sure you stay connected.

Licensing International Expo 2011

With an estimated 19,000 attendees from 84 countries, this year’s Licensing International Expo was a huge success! Animal mascots paraded through the show floors while live penguins and otters participated in booth decor- needless to say the walkways were full of excitement!

The show was comprised of more than 200 booths representing 6,000 brands/intellectual properties, which was an increase of more than 12 percent in brands represented as compared to the 2010 show. It looks like Advanstar has already confirmed the dates for next year’s show- which will again take place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas (sacbee.com). The name of the show will change from Licensing International to Brand Licensing Expo to reflect more of what the show is really about, the brands (licensing.biz.com).

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth this year! We had a great time meeting with customers, potential clients and licensees as they stopped by for a demo or to say hello. Also, congratulations to our licensee iPod shuffle winners!

Didn’t get a chance to stop by?

What is SaaS?

As companies grow and expand, much of the daily work-flow has been digitized to an online platform. Many new terms have emerged in all areas of business, including: “Remote Software Solutions”, “Cloud Computing” and “SaaS”.

So, what is “SaaS”? Webopedia and Wikipedia have provided descriptions to better explain and define Software as a Service (SaaS) such as Mediabox-PA and Mediabox-DAM:

SaaS - Software as a Service, Storage as a Service

"Short for Software as a Service, SaaS is a software delivery method that provides access to software and its functions remotely as a Web-based service. Software as a Service allows organizations to access business functionality at a cost typically less than paying for licensed applications since SaaS pricing is based on a monthly fee. Also, because the software is hosted remotely, users don't need to invest in additional hardware. Software as a Service removes the need for organizations to handle the installation, set-up and often daily upkeep and maintenance. Software as a Service may also be referred to as simply hosted applications."

_________________________________________________________

"Software as a service (SaaS, typically pronounced [sæs]), sometimes referred to as "on-demand software," is a software delivery model in which software and its associated data are hosted centrally (typically in the (Internet) cloud) and are typically accessed by users using a thin client, normally using a web browser over the Internet.

While practically every Internet service (such as Web search engine or web-based Email) is driven by some underlying software, the term Software as a Service (SaaS) is often used in the context of business applications, and in some cases even more narrowly as software in a category which has on-premises software; i.e., equivalent applications that are installed in businesses' computer networks or personal computers."
