MyMediabox Cloud Questions Answered

As a provider of hosted licensing solutions it is important to us that our clients and prospective clients know the following about our cloud services:

1. MyMediabox applications do not add internal IT complexity

According to the article, "Cloud Computing Myths Explained, Part 1", companies tend to resist a migration to the cloud, because they believe that it will complicate their IT processes. However, this is not the case. When you adopt MyMediabox applications, your IT department will not have to take on extra responsibilities. MyMediabox applications are hosted and managed 100% on our servers.

2. MyMediabox monthly licensing costs actually SAVE you money

It is easy to hear "monthly subscription" and assume that purchasing an installed application would be cheaper, because you think of it as a one time cost. Why is this thought process incorrect?

a. When purchasing installed applications, you are required to host the software on your servers. This means your IT team has to take time away from other projects to manage the new software.

b. Upgrades are not included. You will have to continually purchase upgrades.

MyMediabox applications start at a base price of $500/month* or $25/day (based on 20 working days/month). After personnel time savings (Mediabox-PA moves the entire creative approval process online to one central location), as well as outside savings (Mediabox-DAM allows online delivery of assets-- eliminating courier, packaging, mailing expenses),it is easy to see savings of over $25/day.

MAGIC Recap!

WWDMagic, Las Vegas Convention Center
February 2013
MAGIC 2013 was a hit! With 10 fashion sub-shows (WWDMagic, FNPlatform, Sourcing, Project, The Tents @ Project, Project MVMNT, Project Mens Wear, PoolTradeshow, ENKVegas and Shop the Floor), more than 5,000 brands and tens of thousands of attendees, MAGIC is the platform for conducting fashion business.

While typical business at MAGIC consists of buyers placing bulk fashion orders, another area of business has been growing at the show-- licensing. Many fashion brands have already entered the licensing industry, including MyMediabox clients JD Sports and The Cherokee Group. This show MyMediabox associates met with countless fashion brands to discuss the use case of MyMediabox applications for both licensing, as well as brand promotion.

MyMediabox offers hosted solutions for digital asset management (Mediabox-DAM) and creative workflow approvals (Mediabox-PA). Fashion brands use Mediabox-DAM to store, share and manage brand images (i.e. logos, apparel photos, footwear photos and more). The assets stored in Mediabox-DAM are then used in Mediabox-PA projects. With Mediabox-PA you can manage your creative workflow-- from product designs to promotional materials-- all in one convenient location.

Tips for Keeping Your DAM System Healthy

A digital asset management system is a great tool for saving time and money. Hosted systems like Mediabox-DAM allow users to manage and share assets from one convenient location with any internal or external guest who has an internet connection.

Want to make sure your DAM system remains healthy? Here are a few tips:

1. Be aware of aliased assets- duplications lead to redundant data
2. Archive old files- access activity reports to see which files are accessed infrequently
3. Reorganize your folders- delete or update old folders
4. Analyze your folders- if you have thousands of assets in one folder you might want to create subfolders
5. Identify required metadata- inform users uploading assets which metadata fields are necessary

Cloud Security

Some of you may have noticed already that the address bar is a little more crowded in your web browser when you are on your Mediabox websites versus most other sites. Once you hit the "Login" page you will find that the address starts with HTTPS instead of HTTP. What does the extra “S” stand for, besides “spiffy," “splendid," and “spectacular?" Well, in this instance it stands for “Secure." Let me ‘splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up…

Just like on financial websites run by banks and websites approved to process credit card transactions, Mediabox protects all the information sent between your web browser and our servers using the HTTPS protocol. That means the data is encrypted (encoded) so that only the sender and the receiver can unscramble the data, and anyone in-between will effectively know only what webserver IP address you are connecting to and how much data you are sending and receiving, but have no idea what the data actually is.

Why is that important? Well, for starters, it means as your project data travels across the internet nobody else can tell what that data is, so your attachments, digital assets, comments, and other confidential information is kept private. Very private. It also means that your login data, including your email address and password, are securely encrypted the same way, so your internet provider, the people down the street on the same cable or fiber run as you, and Bobby next door who has hacked your wireless home network still can’t get at your data when you connect to Mediabox.

Most browsers now also add a little padlock icon or add a colored area displaying the name of the SSL certificate in the address bar when you have made a secure connection. Yes, that takes up a little more room, but it is meant to grab your attention and let you know something is special about the website. You can watch for the changes by just typing in the address of your Mediabox website, and the moment you click the “Login” button you will see the HTTP change to HTTPS at the very least. Once you see that, all the data sent between your browser and Mediabox is secure. It’s just our way of helping our customers sleep a little better at night.

Metadata in Digital Asset Management

Metadata is used to help humans find specific items related to an asset and is usually expressed as a set of keywords. Metadata basically describes other data. It provides information about an asset’s content.

Prior to metadata standards, every image management system had its own proprietary methods for storing image information, which meant that the information was not available outside of the software — if you sent a photo to someone else, the descriptive information did not travel with it. Metadata allows this information to be transported with the file, in a way that can be understood by other software, hardware, and end users. It can even be transferred between file formats.

Metadata can be stored either internally, in the same file as the data called embedded metadata, or externally, in a separate file.
For example, an image may include metadata that describes how large the picture is, the color depth, the image resolution, when the image was created, and other data. This would be Internal Metadata.

A text document's metadata may contain information about how long the document is, who the author is, when the document was written, and a short summary of the document would be External Metadata.

The Mediabox Digital Asset Management application (Mediabox-DAM) stores the external metadata in Attribute fields that are logically organized and used for quick search results.

Licensing, Not Just for Traditional Character Brands

Hopefully our blog posts have made it clear that licensing is no longer an industry just for character brands. Musicians, celebrities, fashion lines, museums, non profits and many other types of businesses have entered the licensing scene.

According to Publisher's Weekly, one of the newest brands to enter the marketplace is E.L. James' now infamous Fifty Shades of Grey book triology (seen above). As of August 14, CopCorp Licensing (Agent for Fifty Shades of Grey), had sealed three licensing deals for the brand.

Soon consumers will be able to buy Fifty Shades of Grey hosiery, pajamas and day time apparel (including: t-shirts, tops and hoodies).

Music Licensing Brings in $250,000

Today public figures are brands. As brands they can leverage their assets to create promotional products (apparel, toys, footware, etc.) and generate additional revenue. Musicians are not excluded from this; and, in fact have more to gain from licensing than other celebrities. Not only can musicians sell the rights to photos, logos and interviews (to name a few), but they can also license out the rights to their music.

According to Rolling Stone, Matthew Weiner, creator of Mad Men, paid $250,000 in licensing fees to obtain the rights for the Beatles song, "Tomorrow Never Knows". The song was purchased to run on one of the shows episodes.

As reported on investopedia.com, other famous music licensing deals include:

1. Conan O'Brien's use of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", in response to being replaced on NBC's  "The Tonight Show."
(reportedly rights were bought for $50,000)
2. Conan O'Brien's use of the Beatles' "Lovely Rita" to introduce Tom Hanks on his final NBC showing.
(reportedly rights were bought for $10,000)
3. Nike's use of the Beatles' "Revolution" for their Revolution ad campaign.
(reportedly rights were bought for $250,000)

As you can see, music licensing can bring in a great deal of additional revenue. While commercial licensing (seen with well known artists/songs above) brings in an average of $75,000-$200,000 per deal (investopedia.com), music licensing in general is a worthwhile endeavor for any musician.

Interested in seeing how you can utilize Mediabox-DAM to store, promote and share your music to licensees? Click here to schedule a demo.
