Making the move to a Digital Asset Management System

When preparing to implement a Digital Asset Management System, companies should consider the key points below to ensure they will get the most out of using a DAM application. Completing these steps will make for a smooth transition into any DAM system.

          Locating Assets
The first step is locating all of the assets your company owns. Assets may be stored within separate departments or by individuals, by third party suppliers, or be in hard-copy format and need to be digitized. This will usually need to be a company-wide effort since not all departments/individuals are aware of the existence of the same assets.

Organizing Assets
You will need to consider the best way to organize your assets to make it most efficient for your end users. One option is generic cataloging of assets: images, videos, documents, etc. or you could organize your folders by products, brands, departments, regions, or any other category.

Metadata
Tagging your assets with metadata will help your users locate the files within your DAM system by using the key words you have assigned to the assets. We typically recommend companies to choose a few key metadata fields to commit to.

Following these three easy suggestions will make implementing a DAM system much easier and effective. Be sure to check with your provider about the best way to initially upload the assets to your system as well.
