Have you spotted a Franklin and Marshall sweatshirt in London lately? Chances are it belongs to the clothing company, Franklin & Marshall. The company licenses the name from the Pennsylvania liberal arts college.

MSNBC -"While on a trip to London in 2000, Giuseppe Albarelli and Andrea Pensiero found a sweatshirt with the Franklin & Marshall logo while rifling through vintage goodies at a local market. Pensiero, a designer, was already the owner of several shops in Italy, and Albarelli was selling bags made out of ship sails. Together, they decided to found a brand of clothing based on that one sweatshirt they came across in London."

Mediabox Team Spotlight: Ed

This month's Mediabox Team Spotlight is Ed. Ed is a founder and Chief Innovation Officer of My Mediabox. Since the beginning he has helped oversee the development efforts and explored new technology that might provide value to Mediabox customers.

Hometown: I was born in Portsmouth, Virginia but lived in Japan in the 70s and Saudi Arabia in the 80s, as well as various locations here in the US.

Favorite thing about living in Ohio: It is a great city to raise a family, lower cost of living, and there is access to a lot of metropolitan activities (professional sports, arts, entertainment) without the crowds and costs (which is why Cincinnati keeps winning national recognition as a great place to live).

Bragging rights: I won the 2001 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award for eCommerce

Where can we find you on the weekends?: You can find me doing activities with the family. My hobbies (when I have free time) include reef tanks, hacking around with electronics/software, and dabbling with streaming live events.

Rename a File after Uploading to Mediabox-PA

Click on the file name after uploading it to a Mediabox-PA product approvals system. This will allow you to rename any file that you haveuploaded to the system.

Metadata In Digital Asset Management

Metadata is used to help humans find specificitems related to an asset and is usually expressed as a set of keywords. Metadatabasically describes other data. It provides information about an asset’scontent.

Priorto metadata standards, every image management system had its own proprietarymethods for storing image information, which meant that the information was notavailable outside of the software — if you sent a photo to someone else, thedescriptive information did not travel with it. Metadata allows thisinformation to be transported with the file, in a way that can be understood byother software, hardware, and end users. It can even be transferred betweenfile formats.

Metadatacan be stored either internally,in the same file as the data called embedded metadata, or externally, ina separate file.

Forexample, an image may include metadata that describes how large the picture is,the color depth, the image resolution, when the image was created, and otherdata. This would be Internal Metadata.

Atext document's metadata may contain information about how long the documentis, who the author is, when the document was written, and a short summary ofthe document would be External Metadata.

TheMediabox Digital Asset Management application (Mediabox-DAM) stores the external metadata inAttribute fields that are logically organized and used for quick searchresults.

Mediabox Feature: Notes

Within Mediabox-PA (Product Approvals) the attachment “Notes” field is used to provide additional information about the uploaded file.

For the licensee, “Notes” provides a means to add detailed instructions, comments and a way to emphasize an image’s function, specifically for a single attachment.

The licensor in return, can review the “Notes” field and collect this information prior to reviewing the project submission and the attachments and provide a much more qualified and constructive comment.

The attachment “Notes” feature is just another feature that allows Mediabox to help improve work flow, reduce time to production and save money between a licensor and licensee.

Brand Licensing Europe Recap

Brand Licensing Europe is over and we had a fantastic time!

We had three full days catching up with our clients and demonstrating our Mediabox applications to other interested companies.

The show has definitely grown from previous years. According to Licensingbiz.com, the show has doubled in size since 2006. We observed numerous new booths at the show and noticed bigger crowds of people (and characters) roaming the show floors.

There were numerous characters roaming the show floor this year including: Zhu Zhu pet characters, Johnny Bravo and Queen Elizabeth. We were also able to spend some time with our old friends, the Smurfs!

Ending up in jail put an interesting twist to this years show. Well, Sanrio’s jail cell. Before attending a meeting at the Sanrio stand, we were brought into its correctional facility booth where we had mugshots taken, and were greeted with stern police officers who interrogated us of our meeting. We ended up meeting in a jail cell and then had a difficult time being "released". What a great way to “lock in” business deals!

We are excited to announce our deal memo management module--Mediabox-DM!

Mediabox-DM links to the Mediabox-PA (Product Approvals) system and regulates what types of projects a licensee can start based on current contractual rights. Mediabox-DM manages and tracks all deal memo terms, either automatically imported from third-party rights and royalty systems via integration or by direct data entry.

We are excited to release this Mediabox-DM deal memo module upgrade to Mediabox-PA, as it will further automate control over what projects a licensee can start while saving our customers the time and effort currently needed to manually check against a contract. For the vast majority of Licensors who rely on spreadsheets to manage their contracts and deal terms, Mediabox-DM provides a more efficient and automated alternative to manually managing contract details and controlling product approvals, and serves as a solution-focused alternative to full-blown rights and royalty applications.

Mediabox Spotlight: Brian

This month's Mediabox Team Spotlight is Brian. Brian is the Sr. Systems Administrator and Software Developer at My Mediabox and has been with us since January of 2007.

He is responsible for designing, planning, and implementing all aspects of the computer and network infrastructure that runs the Mediabox sites. That is the IT (Information Technology) side of his work. His philosophy is to get the systems set up so they kind of take care of themselves, and that frees him up to improve other systems or develop new features that get added to the Mediabox sites.

Hometown: Milford, OH

Favorite thing about living in Ohio: The green hills around Cincinnati. The many wooded hills around the Ohio river valley make this a beautiful place to live, but they don’t hinder travel like mountains do. Visiting flat areas like Chicago, St. Louis, anywhere in Florida, Cleveland, Buffalo, et. al., or dry hilly areas, like Southern California, make me appreciate being surrounded by hills full of beautiful trees when I return home.

Bragging rights: Other than BASIC, which I learned in 5th grade, I am self-taught in every computer programming language I use to this date.

Favorite apps: CrashPlan backup software. http://crashplan.com Back up your own computers to each other, or to friends’ computers securely and reliably for free!!! Or pay a very low monthly or yearly fee and back up your files to the company’s servers online for extra peace of mind. It makes the IT guy in me very happy!

Where can we find you on the weekends: Anywhere with my wife. Even grocery shopping is a joy when we can do it together. With 4 kids, 1 in college, we always have something to do.

At Mediabox we like to take time to remind you about maximizing your experiences when working with digital assets—particularly high-resolutions images. Image quality is an important factor to consider, especially when uploading images to any Mediabox application.

When uploading images or artwork files on a new project or resubmission whenever possible upload high-resolution files that are 1,000 pixels wide or as close to this width as possible. This optimal resolution and pixel width will allow the Mediabox-PA (Product Approvals) and Mediabox-DAM (Digital Asset Management) software to generate a large and detailed preview image online so that the licensor can easily see the submitted artwork and any small details and will also help speed up the return of comments to you. The Mediabox-PA product approvals software will accept lower resolution and smaller pixel widths; however the preview image displays will not be optimized for viewing.

Let us Sum it up

Some of you may have noticed already that the address bar is a little more crowded in your web browser when you are on your Mediabox websites versus most other sites. Once you hit the "Login" page you will find that the address starts with HTTPS instead of HTTP. What does the extra “S” stand for, besides “spiffy," “splendid," and “spectacular?" Well, in this instance it stands for “Secure." Let me ‘splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up…

Just like on financial websites run by banks and websites approved to process credit card transactions, Mediabox protects all the information sent between your web browser and our servers using the HTTPS protocol. That means the data is encrypted (encoded) so that only the sender and the receiver can unscramble the data, and anyone in-between will effectively know only what webserver IP address you are connecting to and how much data you are sending and receiving, but have no idea what the data actually is.

Why is that important? Well, for starters, it means as your project data travels across the internet nobody else can tell what that data is, so your attachments, digital assets, comments, and other confidential information is kept private. Very private. It also means that your login data, including your email address and password, are securely encrypted the same way, so your internet provider, the people down the street on the same cable or fiber run as you, and Bobby next door who has hacked your wireless home network still can’t get at your data when you connect to Mediabox.

Most browsers now also add a little padlock icon or add a colored area displaying the name of the SSL certificate in the address bar when you have made a secure connection. Yes, that takes up a little more room, but it is meant to grab your attention and let you know something is special about the website. You can watch for the changes by just typing in the address of your Mediabox website, and the moment you click the “Login” button you will see the HTTP change to HTTPS at the very least. Once you see that, all the data sent between your browser and Mediabox is secure. It’s just our way of helping our customers sleep a little better at night.

Licensing International Expo 2011

With an estimated 19,000 attendees from 84 countries, this year’s Licensing International Expo was a huge success! Animal mascots paraded through the show floors while live penguins and otters participated in booth decor- needless to say the walkways were full of excitement!

The show was comprised of more than 200 booths representing 6,000 brands/intellectual properties, which was an increase of more than 12 percent in brands represented as compared to the 2010 show. It looks like Advanstar has already confirmed the dates for next year’s show- which will again take place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas (sacbee.com). The name of the show will change from Licensing International to Brand Licensing Expo to reflect more of what the show is really about, the brands (licensing.biz.com).

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth this year! We had a great time meeting with customers, potential clients and licensees as they stopped by for a demo or to say hello. Also, congratulations to our licensee iPod shuffle winners!

How do I remove the IE HTTPS Security Warning?

For many Internet Explorer users, there is an HTTPS security warning which may pop up on your PC screen as you navigate through secure websites. If you have IE8 it may look like this:

The most common way to remove this constant security warning is to go directly into your control panel and adjust your Internet Options.

For Windows 7 Users:

Go into your Control Panel > Internet Options > Security Tab
Click on the “Custom Level” icon
Under Miscellaneous move the default settings under “Display Mixed Content” to Enable
Click “OK” (You will need to reopen your browser after you change the settings)

Yes, I know it’s a well-worn cliché, but there’s usually a factual starting point behind the best ones. Over the years I have been , on occasion, called a technologist, which I have steadfastly denied. Perhaps the title is due to the line of work Conecture is in, namely, digital asset management and product approvals. What I have always clarified is that I am a problem-solver who happens to use technology for parts of the solution.

Having been in the licensing industry for 18+ years, I was involved in the licensing approvals process when 35MM slides and gels were still shipped by DHL to the licensee. We’d get back box after box of artwork designs drawn on paper, which would in turn quickly get covered in a patchwork of post-it notes from various executives trying to get their “suggested” creative changes into the design process. Hours would be spent sorting through the comments, negotiating with various executives on compromises that conflicted with other executives, editing the comments to ensure the licensee actually understood what was requested and then either faxing or mailing back the comments to the licensee. It was a full-time job for several people and the more licensing we did the more staff we’d have to bring on to handle the approvals.

I recall, during four years of working with one colleague, we never saw the actual surface of her desk, because it was piled nearly two feet high with stacks of approval forms, artwork submissions, and post-it notes, all somehow logically ordered and organized into an offline workflow. It took a lot of time to keep things organized and moving along and time was something we always felt was in short supply.

These days, of course, the technology has advanced considerably, online paperless workflows are becoming the norm, and email is a ubiquitous communications tool. However, somehow time still seems to be in short supply when we talk with potential customers early on about what problems we can help them solve with their licensing business…which brings me back to the cliché. What makes both Mediabox applications so important are that they enable people to become more efficient in their daily work lives by automating or eliminating the “busy work”. Our clients and their licensees, using Mediabox, are able to regain that lost time and use it for more meaningful activities and interactions with their colleagues. I have no doubt that ten years from now we’ll still be measuring every feature and function we add to our Mediabox applications with a simple question: “Will it save someone time or improve productivity?”

Video Support in Product Approvals

We are continuously adding new enhancements and features to our Product Approvals system to meet our client’s needs. One of the latest enhancements is the ability to watch a video in the markup screen without the need to download the video.

Our system will convert most video formats to a Flash file format, which can be viewed by both Macs and PCs that have the Flash Player installed. The Reviewers can watch the video, pause it, make comments based on a general time stamp, continue watching the video and make additional comments as needed.

This new capability has already been highly accepted by both the Licensees and Licensors to improve the workflow process and getting products to market quicker.

Mediabox, the industry standard for Product Approvals and Digital Asset delivery solutions, will continue providing new features based on client feedback.
